Note: The Pilot Program to Prepare for Practical Training (P4T) concluded in December 2022. NAPRA thanks all P4T mentors and mentees for making the project a success. While the mentorship component is now completed, the Diagnostic Tool and Learning Modules (DTLM) introduced as part of P4T continue to be available online to pharmacy professionals and other interested participants, with no prerequisites or requirements. Among the most commonly shared feedback from pharmacists who have participated as mentors in the Pilot Program to Prepare for Practical Training (P4T) is how meaningful the experience has been to them. Passionate about improving pharmacy practice in Canada and dedicated to helping international pharmacy graduates (IPGs) be better prepared for a successful integration into pharmacy practice, P4T mentors enjoy guiding and sharing their knowledge with mentees that are new to Canada.
The P4T mentor’s role is to introduce IPGs to the Canadian pharmacy environment and to help them become better equipped to complete their formal training and, ultimately, protect the public’s health and well-being through safe, regulated pharmacy practices. Mentees have lauded the value of the practical experience the mentorship provides while mentors have noted an appreciable improvement in the mentees’ level of preparedness to successfully challenge mandatory clinical assessments after their in-pharmacy experience. The video below explains how the program benefits both mentors and mentees.
Feedback from P4T mentors and mentees alike has been overwhelmingly positive, and the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) is seeking to place 100 more mentor-mentee pairs across the country.
Pharmacists with a minimum of two years’ experience and in good standing in their respective jurisdictions can apply. Mentors will receive training and support throughout the mentorship experience. P4T offers a wage subsidy to pharmacies to pay international pharmacy graduates as well as a professional fee to compensate for the mentor’s time dedicated to the mentee. More information, including eligibility requirements, can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page.
