The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) is a not-for-profit association that serves an alliance of provincial and territorial pharmacy regulatory bodies as well as the Canadian Armed Forces Pharmacy Services. NAPRA’s members regulate the practice of pharmacy and operation of pharmacies in their respective jurisdictions in Canada and their primary mandate is to serve and protect the public.

Governing NAPRA is a Board of Directors consisting of a director from each pharmacy regulatory authority in Canada and up to three additional Directors bringing unique perspectives, for a total of 17 Board Directors. The Board supports the work of NAPRA by providing oversight, leadership, and strategic advice. Day-to-day operations are led by NAPRA’s Executive Director. The Board is accountable to the organization’s members.

The Need

The NAPRA Board is currently looking to recruit one Director for its Board.

The Role

• Serve as a member of a collegial, consensus-based governing body that is committed to the effective regulation of pharmacy and the protection of the public.
• Bring and apply skills, expertise and perspectives to the collective decision making of the Board.
• Actively prepare for and participate in meetings of the Board, including reviewing documentation, asking questions, providing strategic guidance and advice, and following through on commitments.

Qualifications

The NAPRA Board is looking for candidates who are analytical and critical thinkers, and who have strong interpersonal communication skills, an ability to think strategically and previous experience serving on a governing board. An ability to read and understand financial statements and/or business experience is required, as is an interest in, understanding of, and commitment to NAPRA’s mandate.

NAPRA is particularly interested in receiving applications from those who bring expertise in areas such as finance and risk management, human resources and diversity, equality, inclusion and belonging.  While these are the main areas of interest, NAPRA is also keen to receive applications from individuals who feel they can make a valuable contribution in other relevant areas. 

Board Terms/Participation

• The additional Directors serve an initial two-year term and are eligible for re-appointment for up to one-, two- or three-year terms, to a maximum of six consecutive years of service. 
• Board meetings are held six times a year (in general, two meetings are in person, held at various locations across Canada, with the remaining meetings held by video conference).  In-person meetings are normally two days in length.
• All Directors, ideally, are to participate on a Board committee. Committee meetings are held virtually.

Remuneration

Remuneration in the form of honoraria is available for the additional Directors on the NAPRA Board of Directors, provided that the Director in question is not otherwise being compensated for their time by their employer.

• a cover letter, indicating the reason for an interest in serving on the NAPRA Board of Directors and outlining the particular skills, expertise and perspectives they would bring to the Board;
• a CV, including a list of other Boards of Directors on which they are currently serving and/or have served, if applicable;
• two references, at least one of which is a fellow board member who has served with them.
