*CLOSED* [REMINDER] CONSULTATION: Components for PRA Approach to Compounding Competence

Note: This consultation is now closed.

The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) published an updated entry-to-practice (ETP) competencies document in 2024. In the updated ETP competencies document, NAPRA indicated that the previous 2014 competency “Prepare and compound non-sterile and sterile products according to recognized guidelines and standards of practice” would continue to apply until NAPRA and its Members – the pharmacy regulatory authorities (PRAs) across Canada – had released their plan to ensure appropriate training and assessment of individuals to perform sterile and/or hazardous compounding before engaging in these areas of practice.

In December 2025, NAPRA communicated the PRA agreed-upon approach to compounding competence to key interested parties, as outlined in the consultation document.

NAPRA is now consulting on various components that are required to support the PRAs in implementing the agreed-upon approach to compounding competence, including:

  • guidance for education accreditors
  • a national list of qualifications/criteria for assessors
  • timelines required for the various steps in the process.

The PRAs will then finalize their expectations for the various components, considering the feedback received. Once the timelines are finalized, all affected parties will be encouraged to make the necessary adjustments to align with the PRAs’ approach to compounding competence within the appropriate timeframes.

Once the components required to support the PRAs in implementing the agreed-upon approach to compounding competence have been finalized, the PRA in each jurisdiction will communicate the specific requirements in their province or territory, including the exact process and timelines for implementing and coming into compliance with provincial/territorial requirements.

NAPRA welcomes your feedback on any components of the consultation related to your work.

Please review the consultation document and provide your feedback via the following survey by 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on March 15, 2026.
