NEW NAPRA DOCUMENT PUBLISHED: Professional Competencies for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians at Entry to Practice in Canada

The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) is pleased to announce the publication of its updated practice resource document entitled Professional Competencies for Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians at Entry to Practice in Canada.

NAPRA publishes professional competencies for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians at entry to practice in Canada (ETP competencies) on behalf of its members, the pharmacy regulatory authorities (PRAs) across Canada. The present ETP competencies have been updated to better reflect the professional knowledge, skills, abilities, attitudes, and judgments required for safe and ethical practice by entry-level pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in today’s environment and for at least the next six years.

The ETP competencies are meant to serve as the basis for the development of national pharmacy licensing examinations, educational outcomes for pharmacist and pharmacy technician educational programs, and assessment tools for PRAs. They also serve as a valuable resource for pharmacy professional candidates, pharmacy professionals, and the public, by providing information on the expected competencies of pharmacy professionals at entry to practice.

That being said, it is important for readers to understand that the NAPRA ETP competencies document should not be applied in isolation but is expected to be applied in the context of the overall practice environment, as evidenced through national model standards as well as provincial/territorial scope of practice, standards of practice, guidance documents, and other requirements in that particular jurisdiction and practice environment.

The document is presently available in English only. The French version will be published shortly.
